This stupid obsession with being pureblooded! Even as a child, Victoria comprehended the value of a domesticated purebreed animal, or of coming from a good family with a long lineage. But her understanding of domestication and magi-genetics suggested that pure strains had weaknesses, and a completely pure lineage only truly derived value as a fabricated measure of social prestige. Case in point: her family had wolves, and they were beautiful creatures, but their true value to the family was in breeding wolf-dogs who combined the best features of the wolves with the ability to be domesticated. One wouldn't want the wolves in the family compound. Another case in point: while her mother only allowed purebreed cats in their home, Victoria had friends with mixed-breed cats, and they were perfectly good cats; in some cases, better at being cats than the specimens she had grown up with.

As she watched her family rail on about blood purity in mages, she began to detect a note of fear behind the righteous sneering, and she started to wonder. When she got to Hogwart's and heard tales of the muggle-born Hermione Granger, her suspicions were validated, and Victoria decided to devote the free time of her first year on a research project, cataloguing the most renowned witches and wizards of the last sixty years and their parentage. Professor Binns, despite his defects as an instructor, proved an excellent resource, as the ghost professor had personal experience of them as students and -- if one listened carefully to his droning recitations -- one could elicit tidbits of pertinent information. Her study demonstrated definitively that the notable mages of the day had, over the period of time of the study, measurably seen a gradual increase in the percentage of half-blood and muggle-born mages, until by the present day a sizable percentage of the lauded body of mages could by no means be perceived as pureblooded. A side-sample of Head Boys and Head Girls demonstrated the phenomenon aptly, though Victoria wasn't satisfied with her control for the popularity amongst students and teachers that invariably played some role in the selection.

She never saw her family in the same light after that. Their claims of superiority were a well-disguised fear of loss of power, and their method of vanquishing that fear wasn't pursuit of greater excellence, but rather oppression and abuse of power. She'd never been more satisfied that she'd been the first of her family sorted into a House other than Slytherin.

She suspected even Headmaster Dumbledore knew of it, as he developed the curious habit of winking at her whenever their paths crossed. Background

She shared her side project with Professor Flitwick, who then shared it with Professor McGonagall. She suspected even Headmaster Dumbledore knew of it, as he developed the curious habit of winking at her whenever their paths crossed. It wasn't long after when Professor McGonagall began suggesting books to her and discussing them with her, thus lightly tutoring Victoria in a more advanced study of the History of Magic, and that Professor Flitwick took an even greater personal interest in her as both a Ravenclaw and a student of Charms.

Her twin brother, Mortens, had been much more pliant as a scion of the family, with mostly a strong interest in quidditch and dueling, though he was an excellent student of Potions and took an instant liking to Professor Snape despite their father's admonitions that Severus Snape was untrustworthy. He'd never really questioned the family line on blood purity. But he'd always listened to Victoria, and her arguments swayed him, and he, too, began to look at their family differently.

Victoria joined Dumbledore's Army in her second year, wide-eyed to be in the presence of Hermione Granger. Mortens was embroiled in the Slytherin Quidditch team and couldn't escape notice to participate, but Victoria taught him everything she was learning in private sessions. Mortens later joined Headmistress/High Inquisitor Umbridge's Inquisitorial Squad, using his cover as a loyal Slytherin to feed information to Dumbledore's Army in their fight against the Ministry of Magic.

In their third year, Mortens noted odd behavior in Slytherin Prefect Draco Malfoy, dropping from the Quidditch team and skulking about more than usual. He and Victoria took up the habit of watching him, and alerted Professor Snape when Malfoy brought Death Eaters into the school. Mortens was devastated and became quite lost when Professor Snape killed Headmaster Dumbledore, though Mortens was later vindicated in his trust of the man. Nevertheless, he became fairly self-destructive in their fourth year, throwing himself into his study of duelling, and playing the dangerous game of being a double-agent against the dark forces taking control of the school.

Victoria had no choice but to stay at Hogwarts in her fourth year, her family name and her brother's station in House Slytherin giving her cover to do what she could to aid and assist those students who were most greatly oppressed while the Death Eaters controlled Hogwarts.

Her mother and aunt disappeared after the Battle of Hogwarts. Her father is on house arrest and is standing inquiry with the Ministry of Magic, but Victoria has every expectation that he will be shown to be no more than a sympathizer of the forces that the Order of the Phoenix defeated.

Victoria takes her appointment to Prefect of House Ravenclaw seriously, seeing it as a grand opportunity to participate in the repair and strengthening of Hogwart's and the education and development of future witches and wizards. Her brother, Mortens, has taken to emulating his hero and champion, Severus Snape, and sees the new year as an opportunity to begin repairing the names of House Slytherin and the family name of Fothergill-Cammish.

Defense Against the Dark Arts. 'Professor' Umbridge and the betrayal of the false Professor Moody ruined the class. She attended Professor's Snape's lessons, but stopped going after Amycus Carrow turned it into the Dark Arts class. Professor Flitwick provided cover, and her brother taught her what she needed to know to defend against the curses he was learning.
