I think the greatest bit of info that one can take away from this pataiculrr video is the advice that you should open your eyes and look at what other people do. Common layout elements that have proven to work, appear to be the key skills to achieve. What works? Well, it seems to be ,jolly well find it and then copy it. Not plagiarise it of course.
