He was always interested in reading, he would spend most of his day doing over books at the various libraries. He would go to the University Library everyday, and on the way home he would stop into small, "whole in the wall" book stores. Reading was always an adventure to him, he was a master of unless knowledge.
On his way home from the University one day, he explored a book dealers shop that had just opened. The man had several obscure works on little known subjects, he would have fun coming back here for weeks. He picked a book from the shelf to read overnight and decided that he would be back often till he discovered all the hidden treasures in the small shop.
The book was very difficult to read, some written in a language not familiar to him. He struggled all night with book and found that he was learning to understand the language the farther that he read into the book. The book was a mass of what looked to be incantations and summoning's. He laughed to himself, as he was not one to believe in such things.
As the book was hard to read, he found that he was soon reading aloud, that was a mistake.
The book was real, the incantations worked, to great effect. The summon also worked, but only on himself. When he was though with the book, a week later, he had memorized the incantations and the summons. He took the book back to the dealer, but found that the store was gone.
Seeing that he was now the modern day Merlin the magician, he went out and joined the first team of heroes that he came across. At first he wanted to be called Merlin, but in one battle, seen by the local news, he used the summons spell and transformed into the Wilderness Warrior, a Yeti / Big foot type of creature with snow white fur. The press saw this and dubbed the new hero ... Wintershade
