Xia: Main Page -> Xia: Magic -> Xia: Wok of the Ascendant Chef

"Good! The beef is cooking nicely, with some soy sauce, garlic and black beans. Next we add an infusion of Yang Chi eight-spice powders, to bring out the Fire Trigram, and then balance with Yin Chi tea-stock, to bring in the Water Trigram. Now we taste... Mmmmmmmm."

Overview

This page is a Lore Sheet for Wok of the Ascendant Chef, a set of Magics relating to the use of kung fu sorcery to enhance cooking to astonishing degrees.

Prerequisites

First, it is not possible to practice this martial art without skill in cooking. To represent this, a Xia must first have taken the specialised skill Chef to be able to learn any of the techniques on this style sheet.

Secondly, it is not possible to practice this martial art without adequate ingredients, cooking utensils and a kitchen. Master chefs are presumed to carry around pouches of useful spices, and can make the most of most kitchens, but a bare minimum of fresh foodstuffs, a flame to cook on and a wok, oven or steamer will still be needed.

Note that for these preparations to have their magical effects, the food must be eaten just after it has been cooked. Reheated rations still might taste okay, but the powerful chi effects will be long faded.

Classic Taste Combination

The iron of that asparagus is clashing with the acidity of the orange sauce. But when we add the richness of cream... Doesn't it inspire you?

Cost: None.

Keywords: Magic; Preparation;

Effect: This cookery spell takes one hour to prepare and a few minutes to eat. The delicious results fill the recipient with drive and Yang energy - until their next meal they gain +X to their maximum Yang Chi, and -X to their maximum Yin Chi, where X is the chef's Heaven Trigram.

Chilli Chilli Burns So Good

This won't be the spiciest thing you've ever eaten, but the way I've put the spices together... it'll be the biggest taste explosion you've ever had.

Cost: None.

Keywords: Magic; Preparation;

Effect: This cookery spell takes one hour to prepare and a few minutes to eat. The eater will be stimulated by the Fire Trigram energy within the food - he will instantly feel fully refreshed from tiredness or fatigue, as if he had taken a full night's rest.

Endless Development of Changing Flavours

"The sharp tang gives way to spicyness, and then in comes the creamy flavour! Is it done, is that a creamy finish? But no, here comes the dark richness of the mushrooms! The longer you keep this in your mouth, the more you'll experience..."

Cost: None.

Keywords: Magic; Preparation;

Effect: This cookery spell takes one hour to prepare and a few minutes to eat. The eater will find that the developing flavours open his mind to the essence of the Wind Trigram, and the secrets of inner change. The eater can lose any amount of Physical, Mental or Social resilience, and gain an equal amount of Physical, Social or Mental resilience.

Caterer's Efficiency Technique

Roasted clam with pak choi and steamed rice? Any fool can knock that up in an hour. One hundred orders of the same, in the same time? That's harder.

Cost: None.

Keywords: Magic; Modifier;

Effect: This technique can be used when casting any other spell from this Lore Sheet. At the end of the preparation time, the Chef will have served up sufficient portions of the food to give the spell benefits to a number of people equal to his Thunder Trigram squared. Alternatively, for mundane cooking, this technique can be used to increase number of portions served up in a given time by the same proportion.

Good Ole Rustic Cooking

Forget that fancy stuff the city chefs talk about! This is how my grandmother made beef brisket stew. Doesn't that smell good?

Cost: None.

Keywords: Magic; Preparation;

Effect: This cookery spell takes one hour to prepare and a few minutes to eat. The heartwarming flavours fill the recipient with a sense of contentment and YIn energy - until their next meal they gain +X to their maximum Yin Chi, and -X to their maximum Yang Chi, where X is the chef's Earth Trigram.

Cup of Tea, Ease your Mind

"Cup of tea? You'll feel better once that's down you."

Cost: None.

Keywords: Magic; Preparation;

Effect: This cookery spell takes one hour to prepare and a few minutes to drink. The tea fully restores the drinkers mental and social resilience.

Enigmatic Ingredient

"Is that... mushroom with pepper, maybe?"

Cost: None.

Keywords: Magic; Preparation;

Effect: This cookery spell takes one hour to prepare and a few minutes to eat. The eater will be unable to identify any of the ingredients that are in the food, but will know it looks, smells and tastes good. Note that you can mix anything you like into the meal, and it will still taste good - an excellent way to conceal poison, rotten meat, broken glass, or anything else you wish.

Stomach Filling Goodness

A big bowl of rice for you, with duck-sausage and clouds ears mushrooms. You eat this, you won't be hungry for a while.

Cost: None.

Keywords: Magic; Preparation;

Effect: This cookery spell takes one hour to prepare and a few minutes to eat. The eater feels fully sated by this meal, and will not suffer from hunger nor need to eat again for a number of weeks equal to the chef's Mountain trigram. The eater will still need to drink water as normal, however.
