Yarni was born on a Deathworld, on one of the neighbouring worlds there was a hive that raided the Deathworld for cheap labour and to replenish its own population Yarni was captured in one such raid.

Eventually she joined one of the revolts and was captured, she was going to be executed along with the rest when the arrival of one captain Varla who needed to restock on crew Yarni was one of the lucky volunteers.

I'm thinking something along the lines of the world she was from was obviously pretty damn nasty and made a hardy people that where the frequent focus of slave raids by local systems. Yarni lived much as any other child quickly learning the skills needed to survive but she was much more inquistve than most of her peers.

That was untill the slavers arrived again, as vailently as they fought the deathworlders did not stand a chance and Yarni was among those who where taken.

Soon Yarni and her kins men where bought by a certain Captain Varla and soon put to work. Someone decided that Yarni was slightly different to the normal masses and was put to work with the scribes and accountents rarther than the usual manual labour her type where normaly used for. It did not take Yarni long to realise that she had access to large amounts of money and began to siphon some off hoping to earn enough to buy her freedom. But as she closed on her goal she was caught brigged and introgated it was the most frightening time of her life. But instead of the horrible death she had imagined she offered a chance to earn a kind of freedom on certain conditions.

Yarni accepted and has been a loyal follower of Varla ever since, she does after alll owe Varla her 'freedom' and her life

While aboard she went about looking for awhile out including hacking certain systems to redirect funds and equipment. Unfortuenetly she was caught again but Varla was impressed enough not to execute her instead offering her a provisional position as senior officer with little illusions as to what would happen if she failed or was caught stealing from her again.
