Timeline

1857 Cornelius Klough, aka Baron Nemesis, Master of Mechanism, somehow creates an island in the Atlantic. He is defeated by a coalition of forces led by the British.

1867 or so The island created by Baron Nemesis is eventually sold to a group of mostly-British businessmen, including the group who call themselves The Visionaries. They name it Atlantis, and start building.

1894 The Visionaries, by now in complete control of the island, announce that their building project is complete, open the "crowning jewel of the civilized world" to the world in question.

1910's During the height of World War I, the people of Atlantis, wanting nothing to do with the war, declared its independence as a free and independent state.

1920's Atlantis' immigration restrictions are eased for the first time, in order to accommodate the vast wealth of various foreign millionaires who wanted to live in the ultra-exclusive Atlantis.

1930's Atlantis is hit brutally by the worldwide Depression, and is forced to import workers after many of their own leave the island.

1940's Atlantis enters the war in 1942 on the side of the allies after Churchill appeals to their British roots. Atlantis begins using airships to move goods in hopes of avoiding u-boats.

1950's Atlantis re-declares its neutrality, and serves as a meeting ground for early Cold War diplomatic meetings. It also begins to recruit scientists and scholars from all over the world. Atlantis becomes a stopping and refueling station for trans-Atlantic travel.

1965 Atlantis is conquered by the forces of Doctor Xyle, Dimensional Deviant. The Atlantean resistance eventually brings down the shields and disables the bombs, allowing an international task force to aid them in retaking the island.
