Rax, non-combative self-taught mage

As a orphan growing up in the village, people called the boy Rax. No one remembered his transient parents, but the boy managed to help out enough for a crumb here and an apple there. Growing up he bested many of the other kids at games but he really enjoyed quiet time hanging around the blacksmith. That the smith's daughter was cute and nice to him certainly helped!

When off on his own one day Rax was crawling through the ruins of a very old tower; barely three stones were left on each other. Squirming his skinny frame through cracks and openings he came to a small ending where a rock outcropping seemed odd. He dug around it expecting to find another passageway but instead found a small hiding place for an ancient tome.

This tome gave him more incentive to learn to read and spend time up late at night, but sometimes he was frightened by what he read. The tome's author was the head of a secret dark order who summoned spirits of shadow, and worse. Instead of reveling in the cold heartedness though, Rax natural joy led him to better understand Chaos and how to ward against it or to use it to defend against itself.

That came to pass when Rax defended the village against an attack of Chaos. His will power prevailed, at least in defense, as he shielded others behind a wall of his own dark power. When the Lord's mage heard about this the older wizard made it clear he would brook no rivals and that Rax wasn't to be claiming to be a wizard or any such.
