The Surprise You'll Never Know
The smell of crude disinfectant lingered in the air. Francine had
always hated the smell of hospitals; she had actually hated everything
about hospitals. The woman shouldn’t be here but she had to come; she
had to see the little girl one last time. Besides, she was invisible
if her sire decided to reprimand her for it then so be it.
The woman silently and cautiously made her way into the where the
child slept; little Teresa; Francine’s niece and the only known
survivor of the fire. Only eight years old. Her little body riddled
with the affects of the fire. She looked over the suffering child
and wanted so badly to put the child out of her misery. Francine had
loved Teresa dearly. So, while it pained her to see the child in such
pain; Francine couldn’t bring herself to make it go away.
Her eyes looked down among the child and then went over; taking
Teresa’s small hand in her own held it for a while. The little girl
stirred but didn’t open her eyes. Francine couldn’t watch any longer
and left. She came back two days later to find out that Little Teresa
had been lifted to heaven; as the nurses seemed to say.
Walking out of the hospital; her eyes gazed upward as if trying to see
past the stairs and into heaven itself. God loves children; is that
not what is supposed to be. The innocent should be saved. Francine
was no longer sure she could believe in a God that allowed such
suffering of an innocent child, her entire family to be killed or her
to become ….this …. a monster. She had nothing left to lose. With
that in mind she turned down a narrow alley way and found just one
homeless man sleeping there; he would do for her first human kill.
Hospital. No, Francine was not going to the hospital. No, she hated
hospitals and it wasn’t as if the woman really cared about any of
them. There were just annoying and got in the way. And…. And why
was she finding herself turning the corner and headed towards the
hospital?
The woman sighed. Well, she wouldn’t go in. Turn around her mind
said. That is what Francine would… she would...park the car. The
engine was turned off and she sat there. Finding herself suddenly out
of the car and then walking into the hospital. She was visible but
had purposely made herself look completely different than before;
actually she had turned her appearance into a man. No one could find
out she was here, after all. She just didn’t want them to know as
that might seem like she cared and if she cared about anyone well that
would just be a weakness besides it was highly doubtful that they
cared anything about her which was fine with her.
Walking into the hospital; she ducked into an empty room and made
herself invisible and then came back out. It would be the best way to
find out about Caroline’s condition. Which she did rather quickly
finding out the woman would survive. That was good enough she
supposed and no one would ever know that she came; damn newbie getting
herself ripped apart like that. Well, no matter anymore she now just
wanted out of there as it began to draw up far too many memories.
On her way to the door; Francine was stopped in her tracks by a little
girl that looked just like Teresa had; well except the clothes and the
fact the girl had a cell phone with her. Francine swallowed and went
straight for the door….damn it…..she wasn’t supposed to have emotions;
they just got in the way and caused mistakes to be made. Her sire had
taught her that … no friends, no emotional attachments and only be
truly loyal to yourself. It had kept her around this long; she
certainly couldn’t afford anything different now. With that in her
mind; she got in her car and drove away; she wouldn’t be coming back
here.
