Background
Daniele kicked his feet up on the pilot's board and grinned smugly. Once again he mentally read Susan's goodbye comm; he would never amount to anything, his plans weren't big enough for her, blah... blah... blah... A decade ago it had shredded his heart. He had left everything to be wherever she was. He just didn't count on her wanting to be with someone else. Once the tear bucket had dried up Daniele realized he liked "heading out" more than "coming home".
His mind had been trained by the best to do just that. Organize, lead, inspire, and trust dumb luck when all else failed. His new found crew was as disparate as space could provide and Daniele considered that good fortune. When you don't know where you're going, or what you'll find when you get there, diversity often made living possible.
He mentally printed the comm and burned it once again. Wishing her well, Daniele faced the space that was about to give him his biggest challenge yet. His plans were too big for her.
