Background

History

Even though they show up in anime and manga, few Japanese actually believe there are Nekojin living among them. It helps that they learn from an early age to keep their ears and tails from being seen, and almost every other distinctive feature is only visible when they shift completely into their cat-girl or cat-boy form.

One town well outside Tokyo is home to a small community of nekojin who live among the normal humans. Due to the powers that are common among them, many find a place among the temples of the community, using their powers to serve others. Nearly thirteen years before a boy was born to this community. His mother was known for her visions, and when she first held him she looked up to his father and told him, "When he is twelve, you shall send him to Tokyo, you will know what High School to pick when the time comes. Keep my Tomi safe until then." She held her child the rest of the evening, then passed on in the night from an illness that had weakened her late in her pregnancy.

And so Takahashi Tomi grew up in the small town, surrounded by three older brothers and his father, living quite happily until the fateful day he first went to school. Two things happened on that day. He suddenly found himself surrounded by those strange creatures known as girls, and he began constantly earning among the highest academic scores in the school. He had made few friends outside his family before school and that now came to haunt him as many students took his scores to mean he must be too arrogant and prideful, that he was intentionally showing them up.

And thus began his complicated relationship with the girls of his class. While some of the other boys would stand up for him against each other, they did not want to gain the ire of the true bullies. At any time he could have shown his hidden features and powers. Revealing his claws, or lashing out with the raw magic power he was learning to control. But his family had drilled into him repeatedly that such things were not to be shown in public nor used against other children. So when he could not avoid the bullies he often found himself rescued by the girls of his class and sometimes even girls from other classes, who simply could not stand to see their quiet but cute classmate assaulted. While he loathes to admit it, the bullies did provide him useful training in enduring the most unpleasant of times. Giving him an inner will to keep standing when others would long since have fallen.

On his eleventh birthday the first dream came to him. Wandering what he came to realize was Tokyo, but a Tokyo that lived in fear. Before the terror could get to him a kind hand rested on his shoulder and a kind voice told him, "Not yet, there is still time to prevent this." After describing the dream he was told for the first time of his Mother's words. Over the next year he took his lessons, both at school and among the family, much more seriously. With only days before the deadline for the entrance tests would pass he had another dream. Standing before the gates of a school, staring at the sign and the students passing by. "This is where you must go my son. Here will be the heroes who will stop the terror to come. You must come here and protect them."

Despite making the fourth highest score on the exam, he almost did not make it in due to his age. The first letter to be sent did in fact deny him admission to the school. But despite this, when another student's family called to say she would not be able to attend, Tomi's paperwork had somehow ended up at the top of the stack. Reluctantly a second letter was sent giving him the good news.

None of his family could move with him, their duties remaining back in his home town. But one of his Uncles did know a priest whose temple was near the school. And the priest knew that one of the family's that often helped at the temple had just had a son move out. A week before classes started he arrived and met his hosts. Wondering how long he could keep his secrets from them. Wondering how he will recognize the heroes he has been told will be at school. Hoping desperately not to fail in the task given him.

But things should be better. This is high school now. None of the old bullies will be here. The students will all surely be excited to be this close to college and serious in their studies. Certainly he will stand out for his age, but surely only for that. Finally he can enjoy a community of scholars, and for once be the one doing the protecting. Right?

Tomi's previous story arc

While there are some in his hometown who know of the Nekojin, there are few who doubt that strange things happen around them. Especially after the last year. In one of the darkest hours of his family, one of their own in a fit of jealous rage made a pact with The Dark Realms. While she soon regretted doing so she could not face admitting what she had done. With their hold on her they turned her into a spy and saboteur. As attacks on the temples and community increased Tomi's family first tried to keep him uninvolved, making him promise to come straight home from school and stay at home rather than going out anywhere (especially since his lack of close friends meant he usually wandered alone when he went out).

But when a pair of nightmare beasts attacked the neighbors house he knew he couldn't just hide and do nothing. The neighbors knew nothing of the battles that were taking place for control of the valley, being normal humans without magic or mystic knowledge. Shifting completely into Neko form Tomi leapt out his bedroom window and charged past the beasts into the house. While dodging thrown objects from the family, who initially thought he must be one of the monsters, he managed to raise a shield around most of the house and then put seals on the doors and walls of the room they were in. Fortunately due to the power being out they did not connect the strange cat-beast that saved them with the shy boy next door.

After this his family reluctantly allowed him to take part in the defense of the community, but insisted on keeping him in the back of the fight. He helped maintain the wards on the temples, and in the final battle was one of six who spent the night pouring their strength into keeping the wards strong around the gateway the creatures wanted to unseal and open. A gate that if opened would provide the Dark Realms with an opening directly into the mortal world, a passageway through which their armies could march freely.

But for the first and final battle much of this hidden war passed without excitement for him. In the first he acted without thinking, only later realizing the danger he put himself in. The final battle required him to put forward his best efforts as the enemy threw everything they had at the gate now that they knew its location in the mortal world. Worst came in the final minutes, when his cousin's treason was revealed. Harsh words passed between her and her family, words that could never be taken back. Then, with no hope of restoring her place in the family or gaining the love of the man she was drawn too, his cousin found herself strangely free to act. In one last desperate bid to atone she threw herself at the last of the enemy's Wizard-Priests, disrupting his attack on the gate. As one of the last circle keeping the gate shielded Tomi had a front row seat for her death, and a view of what powerful dimensional magics can do when they feed back on their casters. It took only seconds, but then and in his nightmares it seemed like hours that felt like minutes (somehow long and yet terribly rushed).

In that battle he saw violent death for the first time, his family having managed to shelter him from it until then. Suddenly he realized just what might happen if he failed in the task that he'd been given in his dreams. He trusts in his skill at protective and healing magics, but now worries about his poor skill in actually attacking an enemy. Terrified that he will one day again find himself safe behind a shield, watching, helpless as another dies.

Tomi's Views of...

Hayakawa Noriko: Tomi's initial vote for, "Most likely to be a Denizen spy." Especially when Stella detected that the girl had power. But she is intriguing to him even if in a disturbing manner. And you all know what they say about cats and curiosity.

And those ribbons... *blink* Oh sorry Tomi was staring at her dress again. Ahem, as I was saying those long ribbons make her like a walking cat toy that keeps tempting Tomi to reveal his inner nature. The other boys in class already seem to think he is an annoying little nerd, so he hates to think what would happen if they found him sitting on the ground behind Noriko batting at those ribbons... Heaven help him!

If Noriko ever gave him a chance to talk to his Mother. He'd probably want some privacy since he would be sure he'd probably break down and cry. But he might annoy Noriko whenever he got around to demanding to know why she couldn't just say what needed to be said in those two prophetic dreams rather than just dropping hints. "Couldn't you have just said go to Odawara and help these five girls? It's already embarrassing enough being the youngest kid in school, now everyone thinks I'm a sissy here too because I spent so much time hanging around the girls trying to figure out which ones you wanted me to protect!"

Tarada Fuuka: "Wow! This is so cool! You're smart! Really smart!" Oh great, and I just made myself sound like a dunce. Still it's so cool, finally someone who has a higher average test score than I do! And she's cute with those glasses.

Tomi had considered trying to get some glasses in the hope of hiding his eyes when he starts unconsciously going Neko-mode, but then he worried that they might instead attract attention to his eyes. He might approach her about working together on homework, but for the first time he's found himself worrying about not being smart enough to work with someone.

Angela K. Schildkrote: Foreign Music Girl is interesting too. If she didn't seem so shy about loving music Tomi would probably ask her about what foreign music is like. Since she is obviously so shy about it he only asks her music questions about once or twice a day. And while she might not be as smart as Tarada, she's still super-nifty smart. It's feels so weird to Tomi, but still so very cool to finally be in the company of other people who keep getting high scores!

Lin Fei-Yen: When Tomi first arrived in town he ran into Lin Fei-Yen at the local temple. Well, actually he saw her starting to slip on the temple steps and darted nearly twenty feet in an instant to catch her. Of course moments after stopping her fall he realized he was showing more strength than a normal 13 year old ought to be showing, and worse still he had shifted forms revealing his ears and tail. Then distracted by this problem lost his grip and found himself squished. But if Fei-Yen noticed his Neko features she didn't reveal it, and she seemed quite concerned about having fallen on him.

The temple's priest then introduced them to each other, giving both a surprise when they soon realized they would be going to the same school. Fei-Yen became his first new friend in town. Although he gets terribly self-conscious when she calls him little-brother since he has often wondered what it would be like to have a sister. Apparently big sisters are friendly but smothering. "I'm thirteen, you don't need to grab my hand as we cross the street." "Now now Tomi, what would I say to your Family if you were hit by a car?" Tomi just wishes the other students would stop giving him dagger eyes when she does this kind of sisterly thing.

Kitamura Yoriko: How can anyone so smart be so forgetful? Sure it's a traditional stereotype, but for real?! Still, she is very nice. Probably one of the girls Tomi would try to hide behind if the boys in class started picking on him. She may be scatter brained, but at least she's kind hearted.

Yes, Tomi is an often silly boy. What gave it away?

And now 10 Things About Tomi.

10. He is named after Tommy Milliken, a GI who was part of the Occupation and stayed in Japan after marrying into the family.

9. He is smart enough, and does well enough on tests that he was able to jump to the Freshman class despite only being 13 (12 and a half actually, but he gets teased enough he's not going to point that out).

8. He was frequently bullied at his previous school, almost giving in and using his powers on a few occasions.

7. While cuteness didn't work on bullies he was thankful it often led to rescue from girls in his class -- however humiliating it might be to have a girl chasing away the bully.

6. Unlike normal cats he loves, loves baths. Asking him to take a short bath is just plain mean!

5. The rest of his family does not live in Tokyo. He lives with a family that is associated with one of the temples in the neighborhood, the priest of the temple is a friend of one of his uncles who is the priest of a temple back home.

4. While he is mortally embarassed when his feline instincts kick in and he chases little critters or stares entranced, batting at dangling things, he keeps a ball of yarn and a plush mouse at home.

3. Despite being trained since a young age to hide them around normal humans, his cat ears and tail sometimes become visible when highly emotional.

2. While a bit nervous around large dogs, Tomi likes puppies. They're just so cute and playful!

1. He has no sisters, just his brothers and Father back home. He got teased alot about how often he was rescued by girls. On the other hand they also taught him to respect girls (and if your relatives include cat girls, wouldn't you show them respect?). Yes, this leaves him mentally conflicted at times.

Bonus Bento Box of Bio Bits! Age: 12 and seven months, he rounds it up and says almost thirteen. Favorite Color: Blue Favorite snack: Goldfish crackers (and strawberry Pocky if no one is watching) School Club: Has yet to join any, but is on friendly terms with the astronomy and computer clubs.
