Background

Raised in an upper-middle-class family on Ariel, Tian -- one of four children -- was a cheerful child and a bright student. She showed talent early on for maths and sciences, a situation that her teachers noted and nurtured. By the time secondary school came around, Tian was excelling in her courses and received a scholarship to university as well as another to medical school from the Alliance Navy, both of which she deferred in favor of enlisting when the first UWar began.

David Spencer

Tian joined the Alliance navy and trained as a combat medic. It was a job she loved; there was adventure and adrenaline, and she was serving. The war took her out to Highgate, and there she met Danny Spencer after a convoy she was traveling with was ambushed. Battlefield romances being what they are, it was something of a whirlwind courtship. They were married quickly and Tian was pregnant even faster after that (rather unexpectedly, thankyousomuch!) She was sent Coreward as soon as that happened and Danny stayed on the front lines. She took the opportunity to go ahead and get her university degree and begin medical school. Danny returned whenever he could get leave, but it was difficult. Then he was killed near the end of the war, having only seen his son once, leaving Tian to raise David by herself.

She chose at that time to remain in the navy, helping soldiers recover from injuries and go home to their own loved ones as a way to both honor and grieve for her husband. She continued in what amounted to a reasonably 'normal' life, raising her son, and watching with pride as he took his own oath and joined the navy. When the second U-War began, Tian was assigned to Vandenburg's hospital, placed on the short list for Captain, and groomed to take over the running of the base's hospital.

All that changed when the Independents took Boros. Tian evacuated all the patients and staff who could get out when the call came but she volunteered herself to stay and take care of those who couldn't be moved. Several of her staff also remained. They were held at Vandenburg for nearly three months, treated well enough in that time, and for Tian it changed the way she saw certain things. She struggled with her feelings about the planetary bombardment of a civilian population, the soldier and the doctor within her at war over the how and why of those actions, the rightness of them. After being traded back to the Alliance in a prisoner trade, she found herself unable to reconcile what happened in her own head. In addition to facing possible actions from the military (she should have tried to escape, etc.) she was also facing a medical review board (which cleared her of all actions on that front) and a bit of a crisis of faith. After seeing posters for the Interplanetary Restoration Program, Tian finally came to the decision that she could be more help out there than she really could in White Sun and chose to put in her retirement papers.

Physical Appearance

Tian.jpeg

She is a petite woman, perhaps all of 5'2 in her stocking feet though that's hard to tell because always wears sturdy shoes with at least a two-inch heel. She carries herself with the subtle kind of authority and calm demeanor that comes of a lifetime of military and hospital service, deep brown eyes alert and aware of the area around her without seeming overly anxious about it. She has dark brown hair streaked with subtle shades of blonde and red that she wears in a short style that would be severe if it weren't for the wisps that play around her face and seems to be a quiet woman with a ready smile and a sparkle to her brown eyes.

Psychological Profile

Tian is a compassionate woman who knows how to temper her empathy with pragmatism. She is a consummate professional when it comes to her medical skills, but beneath that cool exterior she is a generally happy person who enjoys life. It has always been clear too that her son comes first. She is a loving albeit somewhat strict parent, and she is proud of her son for choosing to follow in his father's footsteps. Having lost her husband in the first U-War, Tian could have become bitter and left military service but instead she was driven to keep other families from suffering the kind of loss that she and her son faced and continued on in the Alliance Navy, taking care of every soldier who came under her care not just with professional courtesy but genuine kindness.

Notes from the files of psychologist Cmdr. Ian Rothschild:
Report Entered into Alliance Navy Medical Service Records
Patient: Lt. Cmdr Grace Tian, MD

After a full six-week required course of treatment, I find the following:

1) Dr. Grace is suffering mild anxiety and post-traumatic stress that I would expect to see in any of our soldiers returning from battle. She is coping with nightmares of the navy's retreat from Vandenburg and also reports flashback bad dreams of her husband's death in the U-War but is dealing with them in a healthy manner consistent with her personality. Her time in captivity with the enemy was, by her own accounts and those of personnel who were with her at the time, respectful and polite. She has no unmanageable trauma from her time as a POW.

2) Although she is reluctant to speak on the matter, Dr. Grace has begun to show signs of questioning the decisions made by superiors. Her demeanor remains at all times professional when speaking of her ordeal, but there are times when she speaks of patients she treated or particular situations on the ground wherein there is a shift in tone, a dilation of the eyes. She is forthright on the matter of her own decisions -- she remained at Vandenburg to continue to care for Alliance personnel who could not be evacuated and takes pride in that choice.

At this time, Dr. Grace is being released from care and cleared to resume her usual duties. It is my recommendation, however, that she be observed at regular intervals and any actions that deviate from the norm followed up. It is difficult to determine whether she has been compromised by her time as a POW or if she is merely reacting with empathy to the injuries and deaths she has witnessed. Because her job does not bring her into contact with classified materials, I do not believe full surveillance is required but there is an undercurrent to her responses that bears watching.
