Backstory

Patris was the favored son of a Mage-Duke of one of the Ruling Families of the Magocracy, he had a natural aptitude and interest in magic and so at a young age he was being tutored, pampered, and sheltered to groom him for an important position in the family. However, although academically gifted he was lacking in political ambition and cunning. Shortly after finishing his apprenticeship one of his cousins, Sardis Ap-Delbeath, managed to take his place in the family's good graces by engineering a duel which Patris lost quite badly. Although Patris always surpassed Sardis in magical talent and knowledge, Sardis was certainly superior in willpower and practical abilities.

Despite this, Patris feels no ill will towards his cousin (still considering him a friend). He's fine out of the spotlight and would be happy to leave climbing the social ladder to Sardis. However, the duel was still a very public embarassment for his immediate family. To try and escape from all this Patris has applied for a research grant to travel beyond the Magocracy, ostensibly to research the Siphoning phenomena. Of course, his family is assuming that this is some sort of power play to gather influence abroad and reverse his fortunes.

Elianor: Patris' enemy is Elianor, his fiancee. The two were betrothed in an arranged marriage to help cement an alliance between two of the Ruling Families. However, from the moment they met Elianor and Patris have shared an intense, mutual dislike for one another (real distate, not covering up any kind of secret attraction or romance). While Patris deals with the situation by trying to forget about it as best he can, Elianor is more bitter and finds any opportunity she can to make trouble and difficulties for her husband-to-be. She may have been involved in the disastrous duel between him and Sardis and she convinced her family to use the duel as an excuse to demand better terms for the arranged marriage, which at least will delay things for a few years while the two families negotiate new terms.

Patris's manor is located near the edge of the Magocracy, on the northern coast. Due to his recent troubles his holdings are more remote than his rank would indicate, but most of his current income comes from his research grant, which requires him to send regular notes and reports back regarding his studies.
