Background

Illius Grew up in a clan to the far west of the citadels. Her mother died in childbirth and she was brought up by her father, a former great hunter and her older brothers. She spent many hours learning the ways of the wild with them and although she respected Grandmother Sky, she took to the ways of Votank at the time of choosing.

She was an independent soul, fending for herself since her brothers died in a petty war between the citadels and she took to the bow to provide for her aged father. It was this independence that led to her becoming a follower of the huntress, goddess of the moon.

She was surprised by a bear when returning home late at night from a bad hunt, but the moon broke through the clouds to reveal a small cleft in the rocky scrub she was trapped in. She crawled into the small space, spending the night with a growling great bear outside the entrance - and the remains of another traveller who had died in the place. The young girl must have disturbed the spirit of the skeletal remains, for all that night, as she desperately jabbed at the bears grasping paws, visions and ideas spilled through her mind, of the hunter and the hunted and the pale, pale moon - but each time she thought she could go on no longer, the moon would part the clouds and she would see her foe and jab its paws away.

At the dawn, she respectfully buried the remains, discoverig and retaining a small amulet of the moon goddess. From that point, she was certain the goddess had saved her for a reason.

After a harsh winter in which her father passed away, she sought the temple of the moon in Fiores, hoping for understanding. Instead she encountered Marusa, who was initially charming, but who distrusted the naive backcountry woman and her disturbing insights into other ways of Taleen. After charming her into complacency, Marusa attempted to marry her off as part of a political move to power and the young woman, disillusioned by the schemes of the high priestess, fled at night back into the wilds.

She became convinced that Marusa was corrupting the temple of Taleen to her own ends and that her own part is to eventually gain enough knowledge and magical will to be chosen by the goddess and show her worshippers a different way. She knows the road is long and hard, but if it takes the rest of her life, she will reveal Marusa for what she is and bring the temple to a different path, devoid of schemes of worldly power.

Illius now calls Soldiers Port home, having come there as a scout and guide on one of Joh Miths Caravans. She has begun to learn the people to some degree, seeing into their hearts as she sees into the wildlands and the animals she hunts for a living. Although many of her people despise foreigners, she has come to like many of their strange customs and has made friends with one or two merchants, particularly one Xanjeen of Harrappa. To hide herself from Marusas eyes, she has taken to wearing foreign garb, including the Hadash [Half veiled head covering] of some Harrapans. She has also cut her long hair into a Harrapan bob and washes often - once even in a bath! She gets by offering her skills and understanding of local wildlife and plants to Xanjeen in his dealings with locals and has become quite a persuasive speaker - though the intricacies of bargaining are beyond her.
