It was an excellent choice. In just a few measly milennia, the world had grown stuffed to bursting with an array of useful meat puppets and billions of lesser edibles. And heroes that would seek to exterminate it, of course, but it always managed to drift away at the last moment, leaving its former puppet to suffer whatever fate was intended for it.
