:I agree. It's the kind of thing which shouldn't be abused; after all, what is Resources going to do against an honest and unbribable city official? Wonder how to phrase it.... [[User:Aprogressivist|Aprogressivist]] 12:07, 18 March 2007 (PDT)

I've copied and pasted what you posted on my wiki thread. I've italicised what you wrote. In that way anyone can see what we are up to. That many not be a good thing...:-)

''- The Anima Flare Set Back is something I've not yet concretised in my own mind. Really, it's mostly just an excuse to have Bad Stuff happen to a PC who goes overboard, e.g. an excuse to have the Wild Hunt go after them if necessary, that kind of stuff.

-'' I've been contemplating getting rid of the Charm and Anima effects, simply because they're a touch too gamist and don't actually add very much to the game. Their effects would simply be additional Details. Then, instead of having Anima Flare rely on their use, it would instead go off the number of dice used -- a Solar who uses his his full dice creates maximum Anima Flare; one less is minor Anima Flare; two less is merely a glowing Caste Mark and three less is no Flare at all, that kind of thing.''''

These two points are kind of connected in my mind. The way I see it is that Exalted can narrate up to seven details a round. They can also use a charm effect which doubles there dice for a round and and anima effect which does weird stuff for the scene. Before using the Charm and Anima the Exalted can narrate quite a few dice already - this is what I see as being the minor use of essence motes being thrown around. This is the essence that doen't register to most people so to speak. It's when an Exalt uses a charm that things become visible and the Anima Banner burns into life for a larger amount of time. I like the doubling of the dice for Solar Exalts as it gives them even more ass kicking ability than normal. In a kind of ways pays homage to WW Exalteds bucket loads of dice!

The Anima effects do have a mechanical bent to them. I'm thinking they could be streamlined more...but I'm not sure how yet...

''- I was also thinking of simplifying Backgrounds. Here's what I had in mind:

''Backgrounds represent the material and social investment and infrastructures that the character can bring to bear in Conflicts.

''Backgrounds are not described by a number of set sub-traits, but by the circumstance in which they may be brought to bear. The regular Backgrounds from Exalted are a good starting place for inspiration, but not sufficient and final in their description.

''

''Backgrounds are rated from 1 to 3; a Background may be used in a Conflict a number of times equal to its rating. The use of a Background must be declared before any rolls are made. They may do the following:''

''* General: +1 dice on a Minor Challenge (Scab roll), or counter the use of another Background that is appropriately negated.

* Offensive: gain +1 Scarlet success.

* Defensive: gain +2 Ebon successes.''

''Examples:''

''Minor Connections in the Deliberative 1: very useful for social maneuverings within the Realm's byzantine politics.''

''Wise Old Immaculate Master on Mount Meru 2: the esoteric training that the character's mentor has given him permits the use of this Background to represent powerful martial arts moves and Charms, very useful in combat. (Yes, you're using Mentor to beat people up. Would it really make a difference if it was an Artifact?)''

''Suit of Jade Superheavy Plate 3: this Background may be used to negate physical damage, typically combat. It may also be used to impress people with your character's wealth, and possibly even to intimidate them.''

I like the thinking here. Your description of the Mentor background is pretty cool! However I wouldn't limit the use of the background traits to their rating. It would mean that armour and weapons have limited uses which doesn't gel with me. Although I suspose if you use the background you are using a sword for a mighty blow or powering up some special charm on the armour. On second thoughts, I could be convinced!
