Polar Opposite of Normalcy
There are people who homeschool because they want to protect their children's love of learning from the assembly line model of education.

And there are people who homeschool because they don't want their child to be taught silly things like "evolution" or "other ways of living exist, actually".

The Misyndexes fall somewhere in between. While Miran is more socially acclimated then his siblings and parents, there's still a significant divergence between what is normal for his life, and what is normal for most other people. And sometimes that creates misunderstandings

Shifting Universal Constants
A lot of magical law and arcane formula was not always as fixed and inevitable as it appears to us now. Some of the rules we take for granted and hold to so dearly could have been very different. Things may be set in stone now, but there was a time when the stone was still being carved.

So then, what happens if you move to another universe? A new what if? Perhaps then, the formulae are different. Some vast power struggle between astronomical cosmic entities at the dawn of time ended differently, and now spellcraft has different limitations, or different capabilities. A family bloodline supposedly stemming from an ancient blessing from Mithra, the Family Name of Misyndex has long been known to beast and warlock alike.

But the family has fallen on hard times. The modern world of mortals has so many bills to pay, and adventuring doesn't always pay. Being a superhero pays even less.

Miran has always been a bit of a black sheep of the family. He's clever with the magic he's been able to figure out, even able to enhance his family's blessing in some respects, but his brother Celender had bold talents of a type more appropriate to what his family values. Strength, Speed, Talent with the Sword. His largest breakthrough in magical research was mastering a spell that allowed him to slide at an angle orthogonal to material reality. To an outside observer, he could move from one place to another without crossing the intervening distance. Teleportation. It was shortly after that that he received the job offer from Sidewise. His talents would prove useful for them, both as a mage, and as someone with dimensional expertise. And it would also help directed him away from researching multiversal travel of his own. He wasn't looking to study that specifically, of course. And was quite far from cracking the secret. But better safe than sorry.
