==What Sort of Soldier==
"Sure, I served under her when she was a Chuzei.  She's a bad sort of soldier; the sort that thinks she's better than her rank.  Don't get the wrong idea; she was a good lieutenant.  She knew her tactics, knew how to drill, how to get her men to fight for her and she knew how to take orders.  But there's more to soldiering than that.  Soldiering is about keeping your damn head where it belongs.  You get to thinking you deserve a promotion and you start to put your men in tough situations to see if they can win one for you.  That sort of thinking'll get a scale wiped out.  

"I'm friends with some of her Gunchei, now, and they say she hasn't changed much.  I see it, too, when she's walking around the redoubt; a little snap in her step, shows her mind's walking her through a triumphal parade.  I've seen that it in commissioned officers before; it usually goes away, once they've lost a whole damn scale to their pride.  Maybe it's a good thing that she's in charge of an Ashigaru right now; those bastards are as good as dead already."
