== Background == Jace Gillam is a void born who had the misfortune of being born aboard a merchant ship that traveled a trade route along the far rimward edge of the Malfian Sub-Sector, near to the cluster of warp storms known as the Screaming Vortex. Because of their proximity to this hellish, treacherous region of space, the ships of his flotilla were frequently attacked by Chaos pirates and reavers. Growing up, Jace found himself helping to fend off boarding actions by heretics and psychopaths more than once, and he soon became familiar with a stubgun.
Having grown accustomed to the raiding, Jace was still unprepared for the horror of the worst and fiercest raid he would ever survive. As his voidship's flotilla of transports made their way along their circuitous route, they were ambushed by a ferocious wolfpack of fast raiders. Their engines disabled, Jace and his fellow voidsmen found their ship engulfed by frenzied worshipers of the dark gods. With the first lines of resistance hacked down by the bloodthirsty reavers, Jace and his comrades began fighting a hit and run battle on their own ship, fighting deck by deck, as the raiders dragged crewmen off in chains as slaves, or butchered them in their hiding places. By the time they had driven off the pirates, Jace Gillam's beloved wife and children lay among the savaged dead.
Consumed by grief and hatred for their murderers, Jace swore revenge and began a private quest to bring fiery destruction to the raiders responsible for his family's murder. Going into the darkest corners of disreputable void stations and drinking holes, he learned all he could about pirate scum and worked jobs aboard whatever vessel would bring him within a macrocannon's reach of them. To this day, Jace Gillam remains a haunted shell of a man, utterly filled with bitterness and hatred for all pirates, and particularly those reavers aligned with the Ruinous Powers. Nevertheless, what sense of pride remains in him drives him to continue to serve as the highly skilled helmsman he is, for whomever may hire him.
