==Background==
Makao grew up in the Right Arm Isles, eventually taking his place as a salt collector, skimming crystals from marsh pools during the evening, and hunting and fishing in his spare time.  His relative wealth gave him both status and responsibility, and he initiated to Heler the Rain Drummer to learn battle ways and serve as a warrior for his people.

After Heler's miraculous intervention against the plague sharks, Makao fell to the Upland Marsh as a drop of rain, and has fallen in with the Sartarites.  Convinced Heler sent him so far from home for a reason, he looks for anything that might fit that criterion.
