==Background== ''Shamgar was born in the hills and low mountains to the south of Fiora, a vassal known as Cana. He grew up to join a mercenary company, a group of light infantry that hired for Fiora and its allies. He traveled many places and saw many things, but eventually grew tired of risking death for foreign rulers, and retired back to his home. There, he received a vision of Griffin Island and of the great death lizards that lived there, and he knew he was bound to seek them out. Shamgar gained his title, the Rider, from his peculiar sway over animals. Since he was a child, anything big enough to carry him he could compel to do so. As a youth, he rode dogs and goats and rams. As an adult, heβs been astride horses, mules, donkeys, camels, even elephants. He once got a hippopotamus to convey him for a day up the shallows of a river. This strange power has proven useful in his mercenary career on several occasions, but he realizes now that its purpose is to control a great lizard beast, though to what end he cannot say.''
