==Background==
Born and bred in Preston, Lancashire, Simmo was formerly a Sgt in the Queens Lancashire Regiment, but left in 2006 before it merged and became the 1st Battalion, Duke of Lancaster's Regiment. His overseas training deployments were frequent for the 1st Battalion including exercises in Canada, the Gambia, Belize, Kenya and the Oman. He saw active service in Bosnia and Iraq, and was mentioned in dispatches in both theatres. He does not, and will not talk about his active service or his citations.

When he returned to civilian life, friends and family noticed he had changed dramatically becoming much more taciturn and occasionally agressive. Although, he soon distanced himself from both and drifted away from his home town. He ended up in London where he engaged in one long binge of drinking and brawling. Drifting from job to job, bedsit to bedsit. His last real job was working as a Security Consultant for a businessman by the name of De La Roy. He never met his boss, dealing instead with De La Roy's underlings. He can't say why, but something about them, and their whole operation, creeped him out. So as per, he quit the job on payday and went on another bender. It was halfway through this last drinking binge when he witnessed the Battle of Canary Wharf. It changed his life and turned it around. He joined Torchwood determined to make a difference and once again loyally serve.

On his right shoulder he has the QLR's Red Rose tattoo with the Regimental Motto. "Loyally I Serve" underneath the rose. On his right shoulder he has a tattoo of Preston North End FC's badge with the words "Proud Preston" underneath that. He also has a tattoo of an arrow pointing to his heart with the words "Insert Bayonet Here."
