''This young man Varyling, at thirteen, has spent every free time in the giant Hawk Mews for the past year and is a self-proclaimed expert on the care of the birds. He is the nephew of one of the Riders, but much to his disgust Sylvanthi persuaded his parents to let him serve in the temple. He is pretty smart, quiet unless talking about Hawks and his heroic uncle. Sylvanthi may have plans for him unless something happens, and thinks assigning him to Karam will teach both of them something of value.''
