<br>Second son of a minor Scottish clan in Kincardineshire, joined the Army as a cadet and obtained a commission in the British Indian Army of the Bengal Presidency. Developed a deep interest in and love of the local environment and culture. Became involved in the Great Game, and rose to Deputy Assistant Quartermaster General for Intelligence with the Presidency Army General Staff. The circumstances of his "retirement" from active service remain obscure. He now maintains modest rooms in Bayswater, attended by his faithful manservant Nripan, and dines often at the East India Club.
