Susan had asked Tiv to stop by her office - his first time there - after his last exam was completed. He was unpleasantly shocked and very nervous when he followed her directions and encountered the name "Admiral Susan Pickering" on the door. After gently teasing him at his clear distress at learning his friend from the library was an admiral, she explained that she had selected him for an important mission based on her careful evaluation of his file. A Klingon House head, one Ashuk Klith, had carefully and indirectly reached out to the Admiralty for a private meeting regarding a potential alliance. The meeting was to take place above Nimbus III in the Neutral Zone, and she would be attending as the designated diplomat for this entirely off the record event. Tiv, assuming he accepted the position, would serve as her pilot and bodyguard. He quickly agreed.

The meeting itself was a waste of time. Klith just wanted to use Starfleet resources to fund a takeover of a rival House, and cared not at all about the likelihood of outright war resulting from such an action. Admiral Pickering made it abundantly clear that no such arrangement would eve happen. Both parties left disgusted with the result. Hours later, still deep in the Neutral Zone, Susan and Tiv's tiny vessel was struck by a single round of disruptor fire from no identifiable source. Whether this was an attack by Klith in revenge for being refused, by one of his rivals afraid an agreement had been reached, or a stray blast from some entirely unrelated conflict was never determined and was ultimately irrelevant. No matter the source, the fire knocked out the ship's life support and power systems, leaving them in a floating box that would soon become their coffin.

Drawing on his experience jury rigging failing equipment in the mine back home, Tiv worked by touch in the rapidly cooling dark to rewire around the many damaged systems to restore engine power and minimal life support before he and Pickering died from cold and lock of oxygen. It was a near thing - and a long, slow flight without artificial gravity back to their rendezvous point - but his efforts were successful. Afterwards Admiral Pickering was even more invested in his career, ensuring he was placed in best positions to demonstrate his value to Starfleet, leading to a rapid rise through the ranks (and an inadvertent reputation for promotion via political connections). 

Newly promoted to Commander, Tiv has just received orders that he is to report to the USS Endeavor, where he will serve as Head of Security for the ship and, for the first time, as acting second in command of the vessel.
