'''Background:''' Bethan discovered the existence of the divine from an early age, at her grandmother’s knee. Her maternal grandmother, Lotty Wilks, was the Divinity of Roses; her roses were always the best at the county fair, and their perfume the most intoxicating. Maybe it was due to this more limited scope of her divine realm, that Lotty never took it all that seriously, something that she passed onto her grandmother. We’re just humans with divine powers, she’d always say.

Bethan had lived with Lotty since she was an infant, her parents having gone off the rails and died from overdosing when she only a few months old.

Lotty passed on to her granddaughter her love of history, and of genealogy, her house being filled with objects passed onto her from previous generations, and Bethan, a child genius who ended up going to college in her early teens, completed doctorates in history, genealogy, and the restoration of artefacts

Bethan stayed with her grandmother up until the old lady’s death, upon which she inherited her Spark, became Divinity of Entropy, and dropped twenty years biologically.
