== History == === Background === Meredith is the daughter of the nixie Nerissa and a handsome, incautious and soon-drowned practitioner whose name Nerissa didn’t bother to get. Not wanting to spend enough time on land to raise a changeling herself, Nerissa provided the Summer Knight (then John Reuel) with treasure from sunken ships to endow a trust fund and hire caretakers for baby Meredith. Reuel did the best he could, finding human foster parents who seemed kind and were indebted to Summer, but they and Meredith never quite bonded. Meredith grew up lonely and awkward; after a few bad experiences, she became suspicious of anyone who wanted to get close to her, assuming they were after her for sex. === Rising Conflict === When Meredith came of age, Nerissa suddenly appeared to take her away from her foster parents and show her the other half of her heritage. That didn’t work out well either; Meredith was angry that so much had been hidden from her and that Nerissa had never visited her before. Nerissa, herself a vain and shallow creature, kept giving her daughter extravagant gifts in a futile effort to buy Meredith’s affection. They parted on poor terms, and Meredith went back to the land to go to college like a human girl. She was tempted to make the Choice and forsake her faerie side, but couldn’t bring herself to burn that bridge; Nerissa might be a less-than-perfect mother, but the undersea world was beautiful. === First Adventure === When a sleazy sorcerer indebted to the Summer Court is found dead in the storeroom of a chic nightclub, apparently the victim of an overdose of heroin, Meredith’s first impulse is to shrug it off as evolution in action. Her mother Nerissa insists it’s murder, though, and pushes Meredith into investigating. Can she understand the sorcerer’s cryptic notes, go undercover as a nightclub hostess, find the killer and bring them to justice, all while studying for finals? === Guest Starring === Justin Osceola’s trek through the swamp brings him through territory claimed by belligerent fae. Surrounded and outnumbered, Justin is in a tough spot until Meredith (who has reluctantly agreed to run an errand for Nerissa in her capacity as Bursar of the Drowned Exchequer, i.e., keeper of all the loot ever lost at sea) steps in. She arranges safe passage for Justin through the swamp in return for a favor to be named later. === Guest Starring Redux === Meredith is surprised and annoyed when a man of the cloth turns up on her doorstep asking about a fellow oceanography student. Apparently the boy is missing, and in some kind of supernatural trouble? In an uncharacteristic spasm of charity, Meredith does a tracking spell, accompanies Pastor Mac to a Black Court vampire’s lair, and even holds the way out for him and Mara against half a dozen minions while they face down the vampire. ---- Back to [[Miami chronicles|The Miami Chronicles]]
