==Backstory== Yumi's parents died in a car crash when she was ten and her sister Yuri was twelve. The two spent the next six years of their lives in foster care, the first two years at an orphanage and then with a drunken asshole of a foster father, the latter time a period that Yumi would later call ''Jigoku no Yotose'' -- the "Four Years of Hell". While Yuri was quite responsible for her age due to having to take care of Yumi, Yumi was the troublemaker, who, while she was a superb athlete, would always be getting into trouble with the school for frequent fights with others. When Yuri graduated from high school, she moved out and took Yumi with her to live on their own until Yumi finished high school, with Yuri taking a part-time job at the local grocery to provide for the both of them. Yuri went to Kanokon University to study medicine, and joined the Kanokon chapter of Delta Kappa Phi during her first year while Yumi continued going to high school. It was during Spring Break of 1990 that the head of the sorority, Hitomi Nishimura, got the idea to take the sorority on a grand tour through each of the major cities of Thailand. Yumi insisted upon going with Yuri when she found out about the sorority's plan to go to Thailand -- Yumi never liked the idea of Yuri-nee leaving her behind, especially if it meant having to go back to living with their foster father, Komura. The first few nights in Thailand were pretty educational, as Yumi got to sample some of the local cuisine, take in some of the more exciting sights with Yuri, and even talk to some of the local kids, who Yumi enjoyed interacting with. But everything would change when a wrong turn and a bad storm during the sorority's trip to Hat Yai, one of Thailand's more popular tourist attractions, would land the sorority in Roanapur instead. The storm continued through the evening, and this combined with bureaucratic bullshit would conspire to strand the girls in the city for the rest of the night. Hitomi Nishimura, though good at planning out a sorority trip, was a spoiled and arrogant prima donna who would throw hissy fits when things and people didn't go her way and considered anyone who wasn't as rich as she was to be lower than her, which did not help matters in the city one bit. Hitomi was a jerk to both Yumi and Yuri Suenami because of their working class status, which earned her the dislike of both sisters. Yumi's first night in Roanapur was one of tragedy and terror. Yumi and Yuri tagged along with the other girls as they toured the more tourist-friendly bars in Roanapur. At some point, the two were separated from the others, and in trying to find them again, the sisters quickly got lost. Neither of them saw the demon in the alleyway until it was too late. Yuri was pulled right into the alleyway by one of the thing's many tentacles, and when Yumi rushed in to save her, she was not prepared for what she saw. The demon tortured Yuri by means of channeling energy through its tentacles and into her body and by spraying her with thousands of tiny needles with pain-enhancing poison. Every time Yumi tried to help her, she was either smacked into a wall or into the ground by a tentacle or blasted down by a beam from one of the Thing's thousand glowing eyes. Yumi finally got her chance to try to hurt it when she rooted through a nearby dumpster and found a gun belonging to a dead man inside, but as she soon found out, the gun didn't do a thing against the demon -- and neither did anything else she either swung or threw at it. Yumi could do nothing but watch as her beloved sister was dragged into the thing's circular maw by its tentacles and eaten alive. As Yuri was being eaten, she begged Yumi to run and not look back. Yumi spent the rest of the night trying to evade the demon, running and hiding in order not to get eaten herself, while at the same time dodging the various scum that populated Roanapur's streets at night. She does not know what made it decide to stop hunting her -- whether it gave up, caught something else of interest or was interrupted -- but when she was finally safe for the moment, she booked a room with a local hotel that spoke English with what was left of her money, locked the door and broke down. The next morning, Yumi wandered through the city looking for the other members of Delta Kappa Phi, just as lost as she was when the demon attacked. The sixteen-year-old girl quickly attracted the attention of lowlifes who wanted to do bad things to her, and Yumi had to lose them in several harrowing chases in which every one of her athletic skills were put to the test. At the same time, Maki Shino, Yuri's friend from high school who was also part of the sorority, was worried about the Suenamis, and organized a search party to find them. By the time Maki's search party found Yumi, the younger Suenami was frantic, scared and not exactly in the best frame of mind, and was not believed when she told everyone about how her sister had been eaten alive by a monster from beyond. The search party could not find Yuri, and when they returned to the other girls, and Yumi told them of what had happened, those who were not a part of Maki's search party laughed their asses off, which further agitated Yumi. Hitomi wished to leave the city immediately despite Maki's insistence that Yuri was still out there and still alive. When Maki's protests proved to be too much for Hitomi to take, Hitomi verbally ripped into Maki about Yuri, telling her straight out that she did not care about Yuri, that looking for her and Yumi had been a complete waste of valuable time, that if she had been eaten, it was less than she deserved for 'dragging the sorority down'; that she had brought whatever had happened to her on that night upon herself; and worst of all, that she was glad that Yuri was gone, so she couldn't 'pollute' the air that she and her richer friends breathed, and that the only thing that would have been better was if Yumi had disappeared right along with Yuri, just to make her day complete. Unfortunately, Hitomi had said this all right in front of Yumi, who was coming off of a very scary first night and first morning in a very dangerous city, having just lost her sister who was her primary source of support for six long years, and it proved to be the final straw. Yumi snapped and attacked Hitomi, fighting off the other sorority members when they tried to stop her and then pursuing her through Roanapur's streets before cornering her and pounding her head into the pavement in a savage rage until she stopped moving. It didn't take long for the police to catch up with Yumi following Hitomi's death, and she ended up in the local lockup. The cops, worse than any cops Yumi had ever dealt with back home, were not merciful with her, beating the living shit out of her in the interrogation room before throwing her into a holding cell. Another demon attacked the police station that very night and started killing and devouring the cops within. Yumi was in excruciating pain from the beating she had received, worse than any she had ever gotten from Komura, and though she hated the cops that had done this to her, the way they were dying filled Yumi with stark terror for her own life. It reminded her far too much of the moment when she lost her sister, and she very much did not want to die like she believed Yuri had. Kanzoutsukamu appeared to Yumi in her cell, offering Yumi the power to destroy the monster that was attacking the station. Yumi accepted, and in a rush of power and agony, she Awakened. What happened next was a second unleashing of pure hellish rage as Yumi broke loose from the cell and engaged the demon in a desperate and furious battle to the death. Yumi savagely tore into the monster with dozens of conjured knives, and as the monster finally died and Yumi sent it screaming into the void, something awoke within her. The next few hours saw Yumi flying through the city, thoroughly enjoying the power she now possessed and unleashing herself on every demon in sight. By the end of the night, no fewer than six to seven demons were dead by Yumi's hand. And Yumi now had a new purpose. No longer would she live in fear of demons and be their prey. From now on, every ravening thing from beyond she encountered would be '''her''' prey. And the monster that took her sister from her would pay the ultimate price when she caught up with it. The Demon Hunter was born. Over the next few years, Yumi would make Roanapur her own. Through the tutelage of Sylvia, the Gunner Saint, and others, Yumi would grow in power, learning to handle herself in and out of Awakened Form and forging herself into a weapon. Yumi was absolutely merciless in dealing with demons, and over time, her hatred extended not just to the demons that preyed upon the city, but upon anyone who dared to use them against other humans. She soon made a name for herself, not only as one of the deadliest demonslayers in Roanapur, but as an assassin who exclusively targeted summoners, demon cultists and others known to traffic in the demonic.
