Anna leaned back against the statue to think about how to respond to Nick's question--but before she could, his cthonic girlfriend showed up and they went swimming, and a few minutes later they winked out of sight, probably teleporting like Anna had.

Anna crossed her arms--the guy really couldn't change, could he? It was kinda sad, really. Humans could be amazing people, and so could non-humans, but this guy was so set on walling himself off from others that he'd never realize it. One day, maybe, he'd get all the power he was looking for--but he wouldn't have anybody to share it with.

She waited on the beach for a while, watching the sky and the ocean, like the great stone heads that had been doing the same thing for so many hundreds or thousands of years. Monster solidarity, maybe, if the statues were more than stone--but it seemed rude to ask.

Every now and then, a gull cawed, spying something just out of reach. It was peaceful, getting to see the world from a different point of view; it made all of life's problems seem just a little smaller, a little less mean. But peace couldn't last forever--in time, after the tide had gone out and the lone gull had moved on to better venues, Anna's watch beeped, alerting her that the hour was up.

She reached over and patted the statue companionably. "Happy hunting, old man."
