As Ilknur was the youngest of four daughters in a family of craftsmen, there was little chance her family could provide a suitable dowry for her. She was thus given in service to Melachrinos at the age of seven. Raised and educated in the court, she considers the various servants and functionaries to be more family than the one she was born to.
