His family had been on the dole of generations and was full of petty criminals. He was at the very bottom of society as he could get without being a depraved criminal. He saw he way out after listening to a recruitment drive by the Marines. Right out of training he and his mates were thrown into a counter insurgency on Fenris. It grew ugly, and knowing who friend or foe were was almost impossible. Full blown war started just as they were leaving. Jay participated in an orbital ground assault that took his unit into the midst of the war. There they saw what was going on, and sided with the insurgency. They would stay for the next 16 years. After several setbacks Jay had his hands full keeping his squad together, but succeeded through betting on every- and anything. Things didn't get easier, but at least they were able to drink their sorrows away in a makeshift bar they had set up. A virus outbreak left his unit behind Technarch lines, where they blended in with the merc units and fought killer drones. The fighting got brutal, as the virus was extinguished and the insurgents and the Technarchs fought with renewed ferocity. But Jay discovered a cache of virus-free tech, and the helped get the scouts offworld and end the war. Rehabilitated and lionized Jay was recruited by FERA. In a multi-year survey expedition through the zone he encountered many things. The most noteworthy were Hivers who were exploring, confident that their different computers systems were proof against infection. Jay brought back a copy of their general-purpose OS. Now he's been given a misfit crew of reprobates. Not unlike himself.
