'''Herehild''' is Aehlid's grandmother and her jarl. She's been a constant presence in her life, and even if Aehlid worries that her grandmother is being too harsh she still holds Herehild as the best qualities of a leader. Recently Herehild officially cut ties between them, but they still have affection for each other.

Grimwine is Aehlid's older brother. At one point there must have been familial love between them; since Grimwine was maimed, though, he's only seen Aehlid as a threat to his "inheritance". Grimwine wants to see Aehlid out of the way and Aehlid wants to go out in the world and forge her own path, but neither are willing to bend far enough to discuss it with the other.

'''Gray''' is an off-white mastiff hound that comes up to Aehlid's hip. They pair have been nearly inseparable companions for close to ten years, and though Gray isn't the best hunting dog or attack dog he's a constant, welcoming and warming presence in her life.

'''Shieldbridge''' is one of the largest settlements in the Ironlands. Formed where the Ice and High rivers meet to flow down to the Flooded Lands, Shieldbridge is a major trading center where everything from iron to grain to linen and wool change hands. Aehlid's lived there her whole life, but after her proved unable to defend them the people rejected her as a leader.

Mia is Aehlid and Derwyn and Caldas's wife. She's mute, apparently from birth, and communicates by various hand signals and facial expressions. She's a small woman and doesn't like drawing attention to herself; when asked where she's from Derwyn claims she won the other woman in a dice game.

Caldas is Ahelid and Derwyn and Caldas's husband. He's a tall man with a heavy frame who spends most of his time unloading barges down by the river docks. He's native to Shieldbridge and the most gregarious and well-liked of the family.

'''Derwyn''' is Aehlid and Caldas and Mia's wife. She's a professional monster-slayer and an itinerant resident of Shieldbridge. She resents other people having authority over her and doesn't take well, or take at all, to being ordered around.
