Octavians main ability is his keen genius level intellect, this increased reasoning capability is coupelled with his unique perspective on reality allows him to see answers to questions that others often are unable to comprehend. Coupeled with this is an inate understanding of magic and its nature, and a first rate education in a vast series of subjects. Octavian has a voracious appetite for knowledge and is often not satisfied untill he can find an answer for the various questions that trouble him. 
Finally, Octavian possess an inate understanding for the working of mechanics and machienery, so much so that he has often suprised his tutors and senior alchemists and engineers with his ability to disassemble, then modify andsubsequently re-assemble in a far more efficient manner almost any device put before him. 

Octavian has a basic knowledge of fencing, mostly with his sabre, thanks to his father. He's also not too bad a shot with a crossbow, though mostly Octavian prefers to use his mind and magic as his principle weapons in self defence.
