He learned shallow water travel early and, by his late teens/early twenties, became a night boat runner moving misappropriated surplus and other gray-market goods through back cuts and canals. He wasn't a mastermind or kingpin; he was a pilot—the guy trusted to move cargo unseen, quietly, and on time. The work paid, but it also meant living around men who treated people as inventory. '''The incident that forced enlistment''' Cole crossed a corrupt official / law-adjacent operator who used paperwork and muscle to control local smuggling and "surplus" flows. When Jack Carter (Kitty's brother/cousin/whatever) was about to be disposed of as a loose end, Cole intervened and saved him. That drew a personal enemy with reach. Laying low wouldn't solve it; the operator could weaponize both the law and the underworld. Cole's safest move was to become hard to touch: he enlisted. '''War service''' U.S. Coast Guard, Pacific Theater. Served as small-craft coxswain/boat crew supporting landings, harbor control, towing disabled craft, rescue/recovery, and night navigation through reefs and surf under pressure. No supernatural encounters—his war scars are human: cruelty, triage decisions, and the cold logic of logistics. He survived because he is meticulous, calm under stress, and unnervingly competent on dark water. '''Post-war (June 1946)''' Recently home and newly married, Cole is trying to go legitimate. He's oriented toward law enforcement after returning (application in progress or newly hired—keeper can place as needed). The Miami/Everglades honeymoon is both a real attempt at normalcy and a return to terrain that remembers him. '''Personality and tells''' Quiet, watchful, protective. Doesn't glamorize violence. Habitually checks lines, fuel, light sources, and exits. Avoids war stories. Carries himself like a man who expects plans to fail and has already rehearsed the backup. [[File:Colecarter.jpg]] {| || Player || Name || Gender || STR || CON || DEX || INT || SIZ|| POW || EDU || APP || HP || SAN ''|| |- | PathfinderQ1 || Katherine ''Kitty'' Carter || Female || |} She was Kitty all through high school, and during the war years in her hometown- she tried to shift to Kate when she moved to Boston and started working for the Daily Record (but she kept slipping back to Kitty out of habit. Now that she is married, she is trying even harder to go by Kate. She went down to Florida to track down people who had known her cousin before the war, as part of a family history project (and to polish her research and writing skills). And well, there was Cole, who had some interesting stories about Jack. He was hardly the sort of man she would have ever thought she would fall for. But, as the saying goes, "the heart wants what the heart wants what it wants, or else it does not care" (of course Kitty, er Kate, has read Emily Dickinson- she has read a bit of everything). The courtship was a quick one, and Kate set about getting a job at "the local newspaper"- for now, just like in Boston, it was mostly filing, typing, and background research in the newspaper's file room (or "morgue", in newsie-speak). She isn't sure if she will keep the job up just yet, but she isn't really intending to be a traditional housewife. Only four of her family members came down for her wedding- strictly speaking, three family members and her mentor Franklin Temple (an aged historian, editor, and bookstore owner). She had been mostly raised by her aunt and uncle- her mother had died when Kate was very young and her father was not equipped to be a single parent (while her aunt and uncle had wanted children but couldn't have their own). Kate's father was a quiet man, but Cole saw something in him, some qualities he recognized- while Ben Braithwaite was quiet, he hadn't always been that way- and he seemed like he would be a terrible man to cross. When he shook his son-in-law's hand and said "Take care of my little girl," there was definitely an unspoken "Or else" in there.
