No longer was it necessary for the nanites that connected and perfected its citizens to be introduced artificially; so complete was the merger of technology and biology that they were passed from mother to child, ensuring that all future Nucarans were completely integrated into the whole while still retaining their individuality. Luka was assigned to Stellos, a production outpost that supplied refined material to the Arcology. A strange-and highly contagious-malady affected the outpost, disrupting the connection between the people and their nanites. So dependent were they on the microscopic machine-organisms that they could not function without them, and they began to perish. Luka was one of the few who managed to escape before becoming infected, but the masters of Nucaro would not allow him or anyone from Stellos to return, fearing that they might be unwitting carriers of the disease, for which no cure could be found. While cut off from the rest of the Arcology, Luka still has control over his own nanites, and is capable of establishing a link with most computers and machines. Having never known life outside that of the Arcology, he has wandered without purpose since his exile.
