=Background= For all of recorded history, The Wall has existed. Smooth and always slightly warm to the touch, it rises so high that one cannot even see the top on cloudy days. It curves around all The Land - around its idyllic farms, its lazily wending rivers, its lush valleys. The Land is a peaceful place, free from predators and natural disasters. The wizened sages say that The Wall protects them from all such things, and it's difficult to disagree when the worst thing to happen in a living memory was a small granary fire three villages over. Nobody knows who built The Wall, and nobody knows exactly what horror befell the rest of the world that its protection was required in the first place. A strange and potentially upsetting tradition has arisen over the last few centuries. During each of The Land's mild winters, men and women have built ladders and platforms up against The Wall in an attempt to reach the top. There are many who scoff at the idea and many more who fear the builders invite chaos and destruction, but The Land is an egalitarian kingdom and no citizen tells another what he or she cannot do. Last winter, the scaffolding very nearly reached the top. Consensus has been reached. Lots will be drawn at the Spring Festival, held each year at The Land's largest town. The chosen will ascend the last few feet and look over the edge. What a time to be alive!
