== Background == The story of S'Yata starts off simple enough. She was born into a respectable family line who did commendable work for the Vulcan Science Directorate. Her parents worked on a scientific expedition vessel - contrary to popular misbelief, it's not just Starfleet that's doing the exploring. Although still young, she attended the ship to learn their trade in a hands-on, apprenticeship kind of manner. We learn best by doing. One fateful day, that ship encountered a temporal anomaly - or actually, it encountered it on many days. The term "day" stops having meaning when time gets twisted up into a knot. Ever calm and calculating, the Vulcan crew eventually managed to untangle themselves from the anomaly. But S'Yata had been exposed to far stranger things than most of the others, and her mind wasn't yet as regimented as the adults. It left her in a damaged state, the Vulcan of which translates somewhat as "void-scarred" or "space-touched". Strange glimpses from the past, future, different presents, and elsewhen intrude upon her mind. She is still logical like any other Vulcan. She just operates from a different framework of perceptions. While the Vulcans are too reserved to ever say so, in effect it's left her absolutely crazy. She's not insane. But her thoughts and conclusions are incomprehensible to others, which prevents her from functioning within Vulcan society. Fortunately, there is perfect place for oddballs and damaged goods: Starfleet. S'Yata performed well in engineering and science, fields where you typically don't have to interact too much with other people. Her expertise came in handy when Starfleet was investigating whether they could reverse-engineer the Borg transwarp conduit network. While this ultimately didn't quite pan out, it did naturally lead to her working on the Sagan-class design team. Now she has been placed as chief engineer aboard one such vessel. The team which works directly under her is not entirely sure whether this was a good idea or not. But as always... time will tell.
