===Backstory=== Esther's story begins with the Carrington noble family of England, a long and distinguished line of occultists and researchers who go back to the Tudor era, with some working with the distinguished alchemist and philosopher John Dee. Some even whispered that they had otherworldly blood in them, allowing them to do magic - something which was never formally proved; the Carringtons were good at hiding damning evidence and forming working relationships. As time went on, however, the magic bloodline of the Carringtons wore out, whether through ill-advised experiments or through the march of time, and soon they were all mere mortals researching the occult to protect humanity from its ills. Esther's father, Alexander William Carrington, grew up with a natural affinity for magic, something which made his father try to steer him towards a career as an occultist, but the free-spirited Alex resented that. He escaped to America shortly after he came of age to flee his father's domineering influence, and there he met a cheerful Canadian nurse named Alice Grey. It was love at first sight, and the two were soon married and had a daughter, Esther. However, this married bliss was not to last. One night, Alex was killed by a mystical monster that had been causing havoc in the neighborhood, leaving Alice a widow and Esther an orphan at age 6. Lord Carrington soon found the two, and offered to help Alice with her financial and stability woes - provided Esther was sent to the Carrington household to fulfill the role Alex was originally meant to fill; a powerful mage at the House's disposal. Alice steadfastly refused the offer, telling her intrusive father-in-law to leave her family alone. However, Lord William Carrington was determined and resourceful, and soon Alice found the doors closing in her face. Miserable, out of desperation and despair, she eventually caved, handing Esther over to her grandfather to be trained and taught in the ways of the Carrington household. The once cheerful child slowly withered under his control and watchful eye, learning to seek his approval and affection, having been made to believe her mother had abandoned her too. Now that her talent is coming into its own, Esther finds herself handed over to the BPRD as a consultant and support personnel, and will do the best she can to help their cause and fight off otherworldly threats.
