When asked about his Hermetic name, Abu Yusuf replies: "In my culture, Abu Yusuf is a common name for wise men. But--it is only half a name. True wise men have another name as well. With this name, a man who speaks of me with scorn may say, 'Look at his arrogance--he gives himself the name of all wise men, because he considers himself chief among them'. In this way, he gives me power. A man who views me with favor might say, rather, 'Abu Yusuf knows that a man's wisdom is never complete--therefore he shows himself with this name still standing before the doors that lead to wisdom, unsure if he has entered.'
