Aside from helping out on the family aquafarm, Ahrekka grew up participating in a local aquatic variant of Ushaan, one that was treated more like a sport than a duel of honor, although the skills taught were still useful in real combat. Participants wore their hair in long braids, with the objective being to cut the opponent's braid off at the base, and Ahrekka took pride in how rarely she was bested. Ahrekka's other pastime was surfing, a sport imported from Earth but popular on many worlds where a significant amount of the surface is water or another suitable liquid. As Ahrekka was entering adulthood, and not entirely sure what she was going to do with her future, she met and befriended a group of Starfleet Academy students who were taking a surfing trip to Koralia VII while on break. Unfortunately, one of the surf spots the group chose happened to be the hunting grounds of a Koralian Moray. Ahrekka dove in to rescue the students and fight off the Moray, being bitten and severely wounded herself in the process. As she was recovering in hospital, the students suggested that she might be a good fit for Starfleet.
