In the Empire of Syrinx there is an island called Helekia. The eastern side of this island is designated as the Region of Death, a place devoted to all that decays and passes. Deep in the forests of East Helekia there is a primitive tribe called the Gru Gru. The Gru Gru, while highly mystical, believe the use of healing magic is "cheating" and will not cast healing spells. They have therefore been forced to develop other methods to treat their sick such as herbal medicines and alchemy. Using magic to heal is strictly forbidden, on pain of death. Ama-Dee's mother died when he was six, old enough for him to remember her but not old enough to move along easily without her. The most powerful witch doctors in his village - called Sangomas - were rumored to be able to walk with the dead. Hoping to see his mother again,  Ama-Dee decided at a young age that, instead of becoming a warrior when he became an adult, he would instead become a Sangoma (witch doctor). Only a few were selected to train to be Sangomas and of those not all passed the final test.<br><br>
