"There's not much I hate worse than fighting against the Legion.  If I'd known that Philerum had contracted with [[Lookshy]]'s Nasaru Redoubt for protection, I never would've taken the Decelea contract.  We didn't stand a chance, and everybody knew it.  Our only hope was to form up lines and see if we could settle things with champions; not an unusual arrangement in the Hundred Kingdoms, so it was worth a shot.  We had a God Blood with us then, Risen Fang, the son of some bear spirit from Jorst's forest.  If we were lucky, his jade claws and strong arm would've been enough.

"We weren't that lucky.  The Legion's Chuzei stepped out of the ranks.  She was a wisp of a woman with a fierce, proud stare, a small, clipped nose and high cheekbones tinted naturally blue.  Her hair was long and white as snow and whirled in a cloud around her head.  I didn't have to see her in action to know she was an air aspect.  She held her daiklave as if she'd been born to it and when she raised it in salute the wind whipped into a protective frenzy around her.

"Sure, I served under her when she was a Chuzei.  She's a bad sort of soldier; the sort that thinks she's better than her rank.  Don't get the wrong idea; she was a good lieutenant.  She knew her tactics, knew how to drill, how to get her men to fight for her and she knew how to take orders.  But there's more to soldiering than that.  Soldiering is about keeping your damn head where it belongs.  You get to thinking you deserve a promotion and you start to put your men in tough situations to see if they can win one for you.  That sort of thinking'll get a scale wiped out.

"I'm friends with some of her Gunchei, now, and they say she hasn't changed much.  I see it, too, when she's walking around the redoubt; a little snap in her step, shows her mind's walking her through a triumphal parade.  I've seen that it in commissioned officers before; it usually goes away, once they've lost a whole damn scale to their pride.  Maybe it's a good thing that she's in charge of an Ashigaru right now; those bastards are as good as dead already."
