= Backstory = 

Antoine Lachance was born in New Orleans to a old French patrician family in 1852, the ninth of eleven children. He had a privileged childhood, but his all four of his brothers were killed or maimed in the Civil War. The terrible bloodshed motivated him to study medicine, and he became a doctor and surgeon of renown in Louisiana.

He was nearing his retirement when the First World War broke out. Making his way to France via Canada, he joined the SSA (French Medical Corp) as a field surgeon, giving more than two years of distinguished service. 

It was during the Battle of Verdun, a German advance overran his position and his field hospital was shelled. Wounded, dying in a crater shell as the sun set, the vampires fell upon him. He should have died like the rest, but one of them had been a soldier whose life he'd once saved. Dr. Lachance was embraced on March 1st, 1916. The remaining war years were a tidal wave of blood and madness. Horrified at what he had become, the doctor struggled to maintain his humanity in the battlefields of France.

In the decades after the war, he wandered Europe, Western Asia and North Africa, trading his medical skills for the blood he needed, trying to reconsile his base needs with the ideals of his life. In Cairo, this behavior drew the attention of an ancient Salubri who offered him admittance into the bloodline. The power it offered would transform him from a parasite into a symbiote, and he jumped at the chance.

World War Two found him back in France, saving soldiers and repelling the Nazis. After Paris was liberated, he was smuggled aboard a transport ship headed towards Scotland. He intended to hop another ship back to the Eastern Seaboard, but never made it farther than Edinburgh. He got staked in his makeshift nest beneath the Royal Infirmary. He never found out who did it - he went to sleep in January 1945 and woke up in January 2007, staring into the curious eyes of Lydia Kensington. 

It look a while to get back on his feet after such a long torpor, especially given his dietary restrictions. The Philosophers aided him in his recuperation, first as a curiosity but later as a colleague. He had never really associated with any covenant, but their dedication to study and improvement spoke to him. He's been a member in good standing for seven years.

He's spent the last decade building a feeding network, trading his dark powers for a steady supply of Vitae. Anyone in Edinburgh who's too poor, too criminal or too desperate for a hospital eventually receive a house call from the Good Doctor. He's recruited a ghoul - Rory Sinclair, a Hematologist from Royal Infirmary. Doctor Sinclair uses Majesty to climb the rungs of hospital administration, while Doctor LaChance haunts the halls of the hospital and it's blood bank.

The Night of Ashes largely passed by LaChance. He was in London at the time, presenting his research on Herd metaphysics to his Philosopher colleagues. He only heard of it when the phone calls began, desperate and panicked messages from his friends and allies. He raced back to Edinburgh, only to find the city's Kindred nearly snuffed out. He does not know why he avoided such disaster, and fears he won't be so lucky next time...
