Background: Argurios Kynos is the master of the [[Rabid Dogs]] (named after him), one of the nastiest bands of mercenaries to be found in central Asia. A cultured and urbane fellow in polite company, a devout Buddhist in the temple and a vicious killer of men on the battlfield, Argurios prides himself on his contradictions and the independence they give him. [[Prince Taktu]] keeps him on retainer, and has recently begun negotiations to have Argurios and the Dogs break the power of the Trade Bosses. The negotiations are secret and Taktu justifies Argurios' presence around court by pretending to arrange for Argurios to marry one of his bastards. If Argurios is successful in crushing the Trade Bosses, it might even happen. Prior to becoming master of the Rabid Dogs, Argurios worked for [[Kuran Redhanded]], one of the barbarous mercenary captains of the north. The two men parted on bad terms, and have a vendetta running against each other to this day. The Rabid Dogs and Kuran's warband hate one another. Loves: Argurios loves his mercenaries. He shares much of the wealth he makes with them, but in exchange, demands complete loyalty and obedience from them. He's not always successful, and then things get ugly. Hates: Argurios hates his eldest son, Deinos, who betrayed him in battle only a few short years ago. Separated by circumstances before they could settle the issue, each thinks only of revenge on the other for the wrongs done to him. Has: Argurios has his mind. Of uncertain parentage himself, he was raised by Buddhist monks and learnt to cultivate his intellect from an early age. He rose to the position and power he has now through sheer cunning and analytical ability. He avoids drinking and drugs (sometimes), claims to have never been a fool for love (possibly), and sleeps little each night (definitely). He meditates, he reads, he thinks. Wants: Argurios wants power. Lots of it. Familiar with Plato and Aristotle, he justifies his desire as being for an aristocracy - a rule of the best. He would, of course, be a just and wise philosopher-king, not a base tyrant like the debauched weaklings who currently reign. But the important thing is really that he would be in charge. Fears: Argurios fears mediocrity. He fears not standing out, not mattering to people. He fears not being the best at the things he considers important, at not being feared or loved or otherwise thought about. He fears failing to be greater yet than Alexander the Great.
