The studious bookworm would have fit very happily into the family's Loremasters...save for the unexpected development of shugenja talent that forced him out of the comforting silence of the Asako libraries and into the temples of the Isawa. His training was quite a harsh experience, given the Isawa family's general arrogance and long-standing rivalry with the Asako, and Masahiro's sensei drilled into him from the moment he arrived that he would never amount to more than a mere dabbler in an art that was, in the end, too good for the likes of him. While he was able to master spellcasting easily enough, that rough treatment left him questioning his understanding of how the spells he cast actually work, a doubt that plagues him to this day. He did, however, discover that he bore a second talent - the ability to "read" anything he touched, and to discover who last handled any item he examined. While again, his Isawa sensei dismissed this ability as a minor but uninteresting quirk that was likely the result of Masahiro's imperfect understanding of the true workings of magic, the thought occurred to the young shugenja that such a gift might be found useful by magistrates. With that in mind, upon his gempukku he departed from Phoenix lands and sought service under the renowned magistrate Matsu Agetoki...
