Edwin Cocalas is a human sorcerer.  Once a charismatic warlord on Earth, the Varian Confederacy kidnapped him on the eve of a potentially destabilizing triumph and sentenced him to an eternity in Carceri.  With the help of his fellow prisoners, he overcame the guards and took over the Relentless.  Now he sails the Astral Sea as a Freebooter, navigating the narrow line between freedom and anarchy, avoiding the dubious security of the more civilized sectors of the Astral Sea.

=== Appearance ===

Edwin Cocalas is an olive-skinned human male of medium height with an athletic build, used to the physical stress of a life at sea and on the battlefield.  His green eyes bear dark rings beneath, projecting a hard gaze and indicating a stubborn will.  His easily groomed brown hair is held in place by a thin silver circlet around his forehead, accentuating his expressive eyebrows.  

His clothing, although of the highest quality and tailor, avoids the elaborate uniform of the nobility.  The dark on white material follows the simple pattern of an itinerant merchant's dailywear, implying an easy trustworthiness and promising hard wear.  The jacket shimmers slightly, not from use but by design, and the sleeves bear an understated splash of dark red that occasionally glows dully in the midst of battle.  The only other affectation is a glistening emerald stud on a chain that prevents the narrow tie from flapping in the electric winds that constantly swirl around the sorcerer.

=== Personality ===
Edwin Cocalas, born to a hardscrabble existence in Shtown on Earth, has always dreamed of being free.  On Earth, the path to freedom was power, and he had plenty of it, flowing from him like a boundless natural resource.  He assembled an Army of the Oppressed and led a resistance against the Empire of Man.  As victory neared, the army began to disintegrate, but then the Varians kidnapped the sorcerer.  In the Astral Sea, freedom is a ship, and he has one.  He has put thoughts of his bid for power on Earth behind him, but will the Varian Confederation leave him be?  Or will he have to secure his freedom the old-fashioned way?
