I had to restrain myself from shaking her and screaming "why?!" in her face. I hid my stub pistol in my bridesmaid basket and waited until they were pronounced man and wife before shooting them both through the heart. I felt I owed them at least that. Cyrine looked sad, Brutis just looked angry. Mother's scream when I killed him will probably haunt me for the rest of my life. Stop writing now. Painkillers kicking in...

  ''Marshal's personal log:'' It breaks my heart, but I had to transfer Regulator Ummidia from the medical ward to solitary confinement until an Inquisitor arrives. She left us with a real mess. I spoke to her during her transfer. Her eyes that used to be so full of laughter now stare out blankly at the world.

  ''Atella's personal log:'' I was moved to solitary. Good. I don't want to see anyone. I can still see their faces every time I close my eyes...

  ''Atella's personal log:'' I hear people in the hallway outside my cell every day, calling to me. If I ignore them, they go away after a while. They should all just stay away from me. I only bring pain to those I love.

  ''Marshal's personal log:'' Inquisitor Adexa arrived today and asked to immediately speak to Regulator Ummidia. He asked to speak to her alone and I had to comply, but I left 2 guards outside the door, for protection. Less than 15 minutes later, they were hauling a bleeding Inquisitor screaming profanities and brandishing a weapon out of the cell. After a visit to the infirmary and some calming down, I managed to convince him not to declare her hereticus and execute her.

  ''Atella's personal log:'' Punched an inquisitor in the eye today. Bastard insinuated I had other motives to kill all those people. How dare he! I know I was right. Uncle interceded for me. Wish he hadn't. Wish the inquisitor had killed me.

  ''Duty log:'' Regulator Ummidia has been cleared of all suspicions and was put back on active duty, effective immediately.

  ''Atella's personal log:'' People came up and hugged me when I walked out of the cell, expressing their sympathy for my loss. I tried to tell them they were wrong, but for some reason, my voice wouldn't work. That wasn't my brother and my best friend I shot. They died months ago. I will concentrate on my duties, for now.
