− | Banu and | + | Banu and Shadi are children of famine. Their youth was marked by an extended period of scarcity. They were children unlikely to survive, the fruits of pregnancies that were not expected to bear, born into a tribe that was not expected to last. Perhaps this is why Banu and Shadi would later be so disappointed in the wasteful hunts of The First Pack. Forced into nomadism due to the famine, Banu’s tribe seemed eternally plagued by spirits of death and hunger, spirits only she could see. |
One such spirit, a Hursah named Last Whisper, would find itself drawn to Banu (Wolfblood Tell: Familiar). The girl could feel the spirit of death at her side all her life, it seemed to protect her, comfort her. Perhaps it had some insight into her Fate even then. She told no one but her sister. Decades later it would become the totem of Banu’s pack, having slowly grown in size and influence. Any who bind themselves to the totem, a spirit of death and omen, become Cursed (as per the merit) and gain a glimpse of their Fate. Strangely, those under the feather of ‘Last Whisper‘ are not shaken by this, but instead gain a sense of serenity regarding their eventual end. | One such spirit, a Hursah named Last Whisper, would find itself drawn to Banu (Wolfblood Tell: Familiar). Banu and Shadi were ahead of the tribe hunting when it happened. Starving and desperate they had travelled very far afield in search of hunting. Neither remembers it clearly, but what is clear is that Shadi fought for her life against the newly changed Banu. Being far more gifted physically, and talented with a spear, Shadi managed to survive against the creature Banu had become for long enough for the Rage to end. Bitten, clawed and bleeding, she survived. And became wolfblooded as a result (Tell: Bitten). | Banu and Shadi were ahead of the tribe hunting when it happened. Together she and her sister migrate into the Border Marches. She learns more about what she is, and catches glimpses of The First Pack and the Great Predator from a far. Far from being awed, she is disappointed by them. Urfarah hunts in excess, perhaps he always did, or perhaps he only does this now as an outward display of power to those who sense his frailties. The First Pack hunts in his shadow, slavering and slavishly devoted to the hunt. Banu considers them wasteful. They kill more than they can eat, and they respect their prey only until they cease to become prey. They don’t respect the carcass or the corpse. |
− | Soon after this experience Banu | + | Soon after this experience Banu hears of Isim-Ur. Ravening Wolf teaches Uratha to take the hunt one step further. To make full use of the corpses they create on the hunt, the flesh, the fur, the bone. She also incorporates scavenging into her followers diets. Her followers scavenge the ‘incomplete’ hunts of less predators. This of course, is borderline blasphemy to those who venerate Urfarah, but Banu appreciates the serenity and sense of purpose. She is not just a hunter, she is a steward of death and life, of balance. Nothing goes to waste. As children of famine, Banu and Shadi identify greatly with the lodge’s philosophies, and soon become adherents. |
