Alyssa is a young, and fairly obviously affluent, woman although a close eye may suggest that her youth was a hard one. She takes care to present herself well, although she is at most pretty rather than beautiful. Her eyes do not reflect youth or naivete, but rather hardened calculation. Although usually she speaks with a Port Calin accent, and one that suggests a high birth, she occasionally slips and reveals a Great Forks accent.

The Manse is a five-sided pyramid of blued stone, the points overlapping slightly to create a crown of spikes. It has five levels, the lowest of which is below ground level and the highest inside the 'crown'. There are doors at each corner, with straight passages leading to the centre, where a broad spiral stair leads upwards. Every ceiling appears from inside to be open to the sky, giving ample light and an open atmosphere. Alyssa's servants mostly occupy outbuildings constructed recently, and the second and third are somewhat merged, with double-height rooms and broad balconys, usually used for gatherings. Her own apartment occupies the fourth and fifth level, with some guest chambers. More guest rooms are below ground, along with large wine cellars: the Manse is surrounded by vineyards that are one of Alyssa's sources of wealth. The hearthstone is located in a concealed compartment inside the pillar that the stairs circle, accessed on the fourth level.
