Editing Character:Jathan

Jathan Jax was born to a family of minor Delzahn nobility. As a young man, he found inspiration in the stories of the legendary Swan Dragon, greatest Celestial Censor ever given authority over the South. Jathan resolved to embody the impartiality and justice Swan Dragon was so well known for.

To this end Jathan became a civil magistrate in Chiarascuro. He rapidly gained respect in the city and surrounding regions for his fair and well-considered rulings. First mortals came to him to resolve disputes, and then, as his reputation grew, a number of elementals, ghosts, and minor gods began employing him as a mediator and arbiter between themselves and various mortals, and even in purely divine matters.

This eventually lead to trouble. Wong Bongerac, the corrupt current Celestial Censor in the South, saw this as an opportunity to strike at his enemies in the Court of Orderly Flame. Wong Bongerac sent agents to approach Jathan and convince him to issue punitive and undeserved rulings against the censor’s foes. 

First, they ordered him, on the authority of the Heaven, to rule as they desired. Jathan considered this for one day, and then regretfully informed them that the demands of justice knew nothing of borders and realms, and thus he could not modify his rulings as they desired.
Second, the offered him bribes to join them; horses, silver, jade, slaves, all possible if he would simply rule as they desired. This, Jathan considered for one hour, and then informed Wong Bongerac’s agents that all the wealth of the South could not purchase honor, and thus he would not bend.

Finally, the agents offered Jathan his life, for surely they would slay him, and leave his children penniless on the streets if he refused them again. Jathan considered this for precisely one minute, and then informed them that justice is without fear, and so long as he clung to the needs of justice he refused to fear them. Then he drew his sword and they fought.

Jathan would surely have died that afternoon, but as their blades clashed, a great and terrible light filled the room. The power of the Unconquered Sun blazed from his forehead, and a vision of the Unconquered Sun told him to carry the flame of justice to the world.  His enemies could not stand against him.

Since that day, Jathan has continued to act as a magistrate and arbiter, both in the city and travelling when requested. He mostly conceals his Exalted status, but it is no secret among his clients that no lie escapes his sight.

While the arbitration is useful work, Jathan is considering how he might spread his ideals of justice further than his courtroom. His sleep, of late, is troubled by dreams; dreams of battling the pillars of the world, dreams of ancient oaths, and dreams of his own death, at the hands of one of the chosen. Jathan cannot help but want answers about his previous death. Most especially, he wishes to know if slaying him served justice.
