Shadi is Banu's older sister. She is a gifted hunter, and much more athletic than her sister. However, where Banu is impassioned and resolute, Shadi is withdrawn and uncertain. Banu believes strongly in Isim-Ur and takes great pride in being a representative of the cult, but Shadi is far less devout. While she identifies with the philosophies of the cult, she is wary of trusting a spirit as powerful and alien as Isim-Ur. As the last family either has, Shadi follows her sister out of some combination of loyalty, habit and protectiveness, and not necessarily belief in the cause.

Shadi left the tribe not long after Banu's First Change. They were ahead of the tribe hunting when it happened. Starving and desperate, they had travelled very far afield in search of hunting. Neither remembers it clearly, but what is clear is that Shadi fought for her life against the newly changed Banu. Being far more gifted physically, and talented with a spear, Shadi managed to survive against the creature Banu had become for long enough for the Rage to end. Bitten, clawed and bleeding, she survived. And became wolfblooded as a result.

Shadi and her sister Banu are children of famine. Their youth was marked by an extended period of scarcity. They were children unlikely to survive, the fruits of pregnancies that were not expected to bear, born into a tribe that was not expected to last. Perhaps this is why they developed such a distaste for the excess of Urfarah's hunts.
